I'll Be Seeing You Suzanne Hayes Loretta Nyhan Books

I finished this book last evening. 05 January. Yet it is not too soon to say I just read my favorite book of the year. I'm not sure if it was the format (simply letters between two women who begin as unknown, random pen pals) or the time period (World WarII) or the exceptional manner in which each and every character was drawn but to me it was simply magical. These two women stepped right out of the book and sat here on my couch for the past two days and read their letters aloud to me. I could not stop listening. A remarkable telling of two remarkable women. I would give it every star available and 5 is not enough. Might have been the right book at the right time, but it is astonishing. I know these women, I love their families and neighbors, I laughed with them and cried with them and welcomed them into my home and so wish I could visit theirs. Can you tell I really, really loved this book?

I'll Be Seeing You Suzanne Hayes Loretta Nyhan Books Reviews

Loved it. Didn't realize the book was totally letters written by two wives with husband's serving in WWII. They each were randomly selected--one from Iowa and one from Massachusett. Must not have seen that in the review of the book. Anyway, this story keeps you on the edge of your chair because you don't know what's going to happen to the husbands. Members of each family are brought into the story also. It's interesting, historic and you are rooting for the wives not to receive telegrams from the War Dept. You also want them to finally meet after sharing all the trials and tribulations of the war only through letters. Good read.
There is something so deep about a book written in the form of letters. This one is remarkable in so many ways. I came to love the characters, with their strengths and weaknesses. I'll Be Seeing You is perfect for discussion at a book club. For days the old pop song of the same name has been running through my mind. I think the lessons from these two wise friends will ruminate much longer.
Two strangers become penpals during WWII their life and struggles are captured in the letters sent from Massachusetts to Iowa. Two very different woman connected by a world war. They share their joys and fears, happiness and sorrow, success and failures. With each letter exchanged their love and appreciation as well as respect grows. Find a comfy chair, a cup of tea and a box of Kleenex!!!! You are not going to want to put this book down.
This was really well written. Written from the perspective of two women during WW2 who become penpals, it chronicles life during the war and how friends make all the difference in our lives. A lovely story with characters who are real during a hellish time in history. A very rich story. I'll look for more by these authors. One of the best books I've read in some time.
While I initially thought I would find a novel written in the form of letters to be a bit stilted, I had no trouble immersing myself in this dramatic and heartfelt story. I really came to love the characters, and I--again, because of the novel's format--was surprised by the level of drama that the authors were able to create. It's a page-turner, and, as historical fiction told from the perspective of two women, the novel gives a unique view of the events of World War II. I had never before considered the role of spouses and lovers in the context of that war, aside from "Rosie the Riveter." By writing in the format of correspondence, the authors give us a three-dimensional look at the totality of war, not just jingoistic, clichéd history. But don't get me wrong this isn't a war novel per se. It's a story of two (spoiler three) loves and a great friendship. I'm looking forward to the film version.
I have always liked the premise of telling a story through original correspondence in place of a narrative. Letters, notes and telegrams are original sources that allow astute readers to draw their own conclusions. This technique worked well in this book, because the letter writers were two different women in reality, as they were characters in the book.

The home front during World War II was and still is one of my favorite periods in American history, perhaps because so many traces of it were still around when I was growing up. It is real to me. So were the characters of Rita and Glory. That their worlds were turned upside down, but they still carried on is a sound metaphor for the world at the time, and one that is important to communicate to today's readers.

As the men and women of Rita and Glory's generation die out, it is important to get their stories. Even a fictional account is an important part of this process, especially today when text messages is a prime form of communication.

All that being said, I just plain enjoyed the story, the characters and the book.
One of my all-time favorite books, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, is also written in the style of correspondence between characters, so I was happy to come across this wonderful story. Glory Whitehall pulls Rita Vincenzo's name and address out of a hat. They are both wives of enlisted men in World War II. Without much expectation, Glory sends off the first letter to Rita and there are planted the seeds of a forever friendship. Through all the trials that war brings, these two women support each other solely through correspondence. It points out to me something we have lost in this day and age of instant communication -- the power of the written word between individuals that by its nature becomes something tangible to be saved and cherished and re-read in times of trouble. The character development here is stellar. I will confess that had I known it was a "Harlequin" book, I may have passed it over. I'm so glad I didn't. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
