Dos Passos brings you back to the period when the USA entered the great European War, that is World War One, the war to end all wars. Full of day to day details about the politics, labor struggles, and headlines of the times. It was a fast read for me, and I am a slow reader. It smacks you in the face with the reality of the "Good Old Days." It bore an eerie resemblance to my owns experiences as a college student during the Viet Nam War. If you want to know how the USA got into the state it is now in, read the entire Dos Passes trilogy, USA, and you will see it has always been this way.Tags : 1919: Volume Two of the U.S.A. 1919 Volume Two of the USA Trilogy John Dos Passos 0046442056823 Books Reviews
I've read 2 of the 3 books in the trilogy. Gives you a good sense of the 20's. Different from Hemingway, his one time friend.
Just heard a reference last night to Dos Passos in a film about writers.
Interesting, but difficult to follow.
But still a bit of a weird format. The closing chapter is exceptionally interesting and well written. Overall, a fairly enjoyable book.
Dos Passos is one of the great American writers. Makes Hemingway seem cheesy and Faulkner self involved. This triogy is a glimpse into an American that is long gone, but shaped the one we live it. GREAT read!
This is a review of the Mariner paperback edition, published by Houghton Mifflin. The U.S.A. trilogy is wonderful, and Dos Passos' seemingly artless style fairly sweeps you along--it's as if each of the many characters whose fates he intertwines has written his or her story as a chatty, intimate letter and Dos Passos has simply edited them lightly. BUT don't buy this edition! The covers are beautifully designed, but these volumes contain a scandalous number of typographical errors.
I am not a fan of the camera eye. In addition, longsentenceswithallwordsattacheddonotworkwellforme. Well written prose and interesting narrative from an historical standpoint. I took a two-book pause between its predecessor 42nd Parallel and 1919. I may take a two-decade pause until I open The Big Money, well well after I've read Ragtime, Manhattan Transfer and Berlin AlexanderPlatz.
First book of the Trilogy was very good. This one just drones on and on and on with few interesting characters and interminable descriptions of the labor struggle. Can't wait to finish because I want to get on to the last installment. I know now why Dos Passos played third fiddle to Heminway and Fitzgerald.
