Master piece of literature. The book is superbly written with just enough of a love story / hard living to keep one reading. Set in the 1880 in a time when things were rough this is just so enthralling. The author really knows how to tell a story and keep one on the edge with constant trials and tribulations for the characters. I did listen on audio book and did manage to walk 70km while listing to the books 1130hrs. It made for and enjoyable bit of walking. The book keep drawing me in and in. Never once did I not want to hang on every word. The pain and suffering of the woodsmen make my life seem so simple and mundane. It was really a different era. Maybe a simpler time but much rougher.
A very interesting, well written book that keeps your interest throughout the book. It is very wholesome, shows a good knowledge of the subject(in this case it is logging and getting the logs to the mill, as well as the business side of logging to a degree). I read it many years ago and knew my husband would like it. He didn't read much at that time, so never did. Then I forgot the name of the book, but always wanted him to read it. One day he chose it from the bookshelves himself and had a hard time to put it down. I have since re-read it and enjoyed it again. We have a friend who logged for many years, but is now blind. I wish it were done on audio tapes so he could listen to it. He would enjoy it so much.
I have an original copy of this book that I found at an antique shop. There is a companion book to this also written by Stewart White called "The Riverman", also an excellent book! I recomend this book highly, it is well written, has a very good story line that will keep you turning pages well into the night! If you can find an original it's worth it, if not buy this reproduction. Although written in the prose of the early 1900s it is easy to read and kids will like it as well. I also highly recomend "The Riverman", another well written engauging story.
It was very difficult to get into the story. Great information regarding early lumber days in Michigan.
